| Maritime history showcased in new exhibit Visit the parish's past through images and oral histories
St. Tammany Parish, aka Louisiana's Northshore, is rich in maritime history. That history is showcased at the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum in Madisonville, a town situated near the mouth of the Tchefuncte River as it empties into Lake Pontchartrain. The museum is hosting a special exhibit, "Waterways to Railways: Images and Oral Histories," through March 31, highlighting the stories of the families who worked the waterways. Through images and oral histories, learn about the schooner captains and lighthouses, the Chahta Indians, bayou musicians and boat builders and many more. Get exhibit details by clicking on the Events calendar.
| Mardi Gras gets festive here on the Northshore Parades roll on St. Tammany streets and waterways
Time to think Mardi Gras! Come catch our family-friendly Carnival here on the Northshore, where two dozen parades make merry, featuring colorful floats, costumed riders, and the opportunity to catch "throws" (the beads and trinkets those riders toss to the crowd). Among the standouts: Abita Springs' wacky Krewe of Push Mow, Mandeville's Krewe of Eve, Covington's Olympia and Slidell's Krewes of Dionysus and Selene. There also are boat parades in Slidell (Krewe of Bilge) and Madisonville (Krewe of Tchefuncte). See the events calendar for details on these and other parades, coming up in February.
| 'Restaurateur of the Year' Northshore native John Besh honored
A native of Slidell, on the east side of St. Tammany Parish, chef John Besh has been a familiar face on the Northshore for years. Besh became familiar to a national audience after appearances on NBC’S "Today Show," The Food Network’s "Iron Chef" and "Next Iron Chef" programs and through work as a cultural and culinary ambassador for the state of Louisiana. For his accomplishments, which include operating four noteworthy restaurants in the New Orleans area – including La Provence here on the Northshore – he has been named Restaurateur of the Year by the Louisiana Restaurant Association.
