Family Reunion Itinerary
Day 1 Spend the day shopping and touring historic downtown Covington. Many of the picturesque town's historic homes have been restored as antique and specialty shops, art galleries and an eclectic selection of restaurants, making the downtown area a popular visitor destination. (We can arrange tours and scavenger hunts in this exceptional and surprisingly affordable destination.) Don’t miss HJ Smith's Son General Store and Museum, family-owned and operated since 1876. The museum houses hundreds of items from Covington’s past, including a 20-foot-long cypress dugout boat, cast iron casket, old farming tools, a 1920s gas pump, a hand-operated wooden washing machine, and much more. Meet and greet at the hotel in the hospitality room for the rest of the evening. Day 2 Breakfast at the hotel and then it’s off to Global Wildlife Center for a 90-minute guided wagon tour of a 900-acre wildlife preserve, with many rare and endangered animals from all over the world. It’s the largest free-roaming wildlife preserve in the United States and was featured on the cover of the National Tour Association’s publication Courier Magazine and AAA Southern Traveler. Special events are a snap at the new pavilion area. Have a crawfish boil or picnic for lunch at one of our two state parks – Fontainebleau State Park in Mandeville or Fairview-Riverside State Park in Madisonville. Have it catered or pack it yourself. After a relaxing day in the outdoors, continue with a private dinner at Palmettos on the Bayou in Slidell. Great Louisiana specialties served indoors or out on the restaurant’s series of decks overlooking scenic Bayou Bonfouca. Day 3 Have a wonderful brunch at Annadale’s Plantation in Covington.
