Take a tour of Honey Island Swamp.
Take a tour of Honey Island Swamp.
Renee Kientz
Find great attractions, adventure – and appreciative audiences – on your tour of Louisiana’s Northshore, St. Tammany Parish.

Day 1
Begin the day by enjoying the outdoors with a Honey Island Swamp Tour. Take a narrated boat tour on one of America's most pristine cypress river swamps. Native naturalist guides will teach you the history, folklore and ecology of the swamp and its inhabitants.

Stroll down memory lane in Olde Towne Slidell Antiques District. Find antiques shops, collectibles, contemporary accessories, gift shops, art galleries and restaurants all within a short walking distance.

Perform at lunch during our “Brown Bag” concert series at Griffith Park in Slidell.

Later that day, visit Madisonville’s Lake Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum. Feel Louisiana's pride while viewing boat models, highlighted by a video exploring origins and adaptations of the local watercraft. Dioramas depict frontier life on the bayou and the commercial uses of ships called luggers and schooners. See a 2/3-scale paddle-wheeler/theater featuring an award-winning video presentation about Louisiana’s maritime heritage.

Day 2
Spend the morning on a one-hour guided tour of Covington’s Insta-Gator Ranch & Hatchery, Louisiana’s only licensed alligator ranch that’s open to the public. Learn about the industry from hatchling to handbag. Feed some of the 2,000 gators swimming in crystal clear water or hold a four-footer.
Cycling along the Tammany Trace is a great way to explore the area.

Then travel downtown to visit Heiner Brau Micro-brewery, located in a historic, once-popular gathering place near the old Covington train depot. This is one of two microbreweries in the area.

While in Covington don’t miss H. J. Smith's Son General Store and Museum. Family-owned and operated since 1876, the museum houses hundreds of items from the past, including a 20-foot-long cypress dugout boat, a cast iron casket, old farming tools, a 1920s gas pump, a hand-operated wooden washing machine, and much more.

Your group can also perform at the Covington Farmers Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Later, stretch your limbs on the Tammany Trace, a “rails to trails” hiking and biking path that spans more than 31 miles and was recently recognized by the White House as a Millennium Legacy Trail.

Day 3
Travel to the Northshore’s Serengeti! Start your day with a tour at Folsom’s Global Wildlife Center, the largest free-roaming wildlife preserve in the United States. This 90-minute guided wagon tour of a 900-acre wildlife preserve offers a glimpse of many rare and endangered animals from all over the world.

Head on over to the Mandeville Lakefront and catch a breathtaking view of Lake Pontchartrain and the longest bridge over water in the world – the 24-mile Causeway, connecting Mandeville to the south shore.

Wrap up your trip with an outdoor concert at Slidell’s Heritage Park located on beautiful Bayou Bonfouca during our Bayou Jams concert series.
