Playmakers, Inc. Community Theater announces the production of a staged reading of Art by Yasmina Reza on Sunday, March 25 at 1pm at the St. Tammany Art Association's Art House, 320 Columbia Street in Covington.
This is the second in a planned year-long series of staged readings at various venues throughout the area. The first production in the series was Ladies in Waiting: The Judgement of Henry VIII, which was performed at Madisonville's historic Bayou Cottage to a sold-out crowd, receiving a standing ovation.
The cast of Art is Ros Pogue as Serge, Gordon Carmadelle as Ivan, and Kenneth Faherty as Marc. How much would you pay for a white painting? Would it be art? Serge has just bought a very expensive painting: all white with white diagonal lines. Marc and Ivan, friends of Serge, have differing opinions on the painting and the discussion at once becomes lively, funny and touching in this Tony Award-winning play.
In addition to winning Tony's Best Play in 1998, Art was recognized in France with three Moliere Awards (Best Play, Best Production and Best Author), and in London with the Evening Standard Award for Best Comedy of the Year. It has since been produced worldwide and translated into twenty languages.
"Art is billed as a comedy but it is much more than that," says Larry Gray, director of the show. "It is, on the surface, a play about art but more importantly, it is a very funny and, at the same time, very serious play about friendship."
Admission is $15.00 for all seats, and tickets may be reserved by calling Playmakers at (985) 893-1671 or purchased online at www.playmakersinc.com.
Next up for Playmakers' Readers Theatre is the Murder Mystery Dinner A Wives' Tale, a single performance on May 18, 7pm to 9pm, at the English Tea Room & Eatery, 734 E. Rutland St. in Covington. Reservations available through the English Tea Room at (985) 893-3988.
