The final concert of the fall season of shows at historic Dew Drop Social & Benevolent Jazz Hall in Old Mandeville is the all-female, all traditional jazz, all-sass, all-fun, New Orleans-based Shake ‘Em Up Jazz Band on Friday, December 14th, 6:30-9:00pm.
Admission for each concert is $10 at the door. Friends of the Dew Drop members will maintain a beverage center for a nominal fee and offer souvenir Dew Drop merchandise. The members of the First Free Mission Baptist Church next door will offer hearty, home-cooked meals for a nominal fee. Free off-street parking in neighborhood.
The ladies of Shake ‘Em Up Jazz Band will rock the house and have the Dew Drop audience up on their feet. Santa may even come to town early to catch this group, because, we are told, his reindeer love New Orleans music. Shake ‘Em Up was assembled in 2016 to perform for “Girls Rock New Orleans.” They blew that room away and the requests to perform flew in. The band has since enjoyed a stream of bookings, including the Abita Springs Opry, the Nevermore Jazz Ball, and the Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia, Italy.
Shake 'Em Up performs steadily in New Orleans clubs, including Preservation Hall, Spotted Cat Music Club, Maison Frenchmen, and will make their French Quarter Fest and New Orleans Jazz Festival debut in April 2019. This sublime crew, most of whom provide vocals, includes Marla Dixon on trumpet, Chloe Feoranzo on clarinet, Haruka Kikuchi on trombone, Molly Reeves on guitar, Julie Schexnayder on upright bass and Defne “Dizzy'”Incirlioglu on percussion.
***Owned by the City of Mandeville, the Dew Drop is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is managed by the non-profit Friends of the Dew Drop who all volunteer to bring music to the historic site and preserve and protect it. It also manages an outreach program called Dew Drop JazzKids wherein local jazz musicians conduct programs on jazz music for elementary school students in St. Tammany Parish.
