The Northlake Nature Center in Mandeville, Louisiana presents the 22nd annual Great Louisiana BirdFest, April 13-15, 2018, held on 400 woodland acres along the lovely Bayou Castine. This popular event gives visiting birders a chance to explore many of St. Tammany's most popular birding spots.
This is an annual event of the Northlake Nature Center when many species of birds are migrating north through Louisiana from Mexico and South America. BirdFest trips will visit varied habitat including swamps, wetlands, pine savanna, and hardwoods of southeast Louisiana.
The weather is typically warm--not hot--and trees are usually leafing out, but still thin enough for improved visibility. Bird watchers travel from all corners of the U.S. and from other countries to participate because the area is a prime bird watching location and the Great Louisiana BirdFest is considered one of the premier birding events in the country.
ADVANCE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Additional information and registration on the website at www.northlakenature.org soon!
Past BirdFests have included numerous birdwatching trips to frequent roosting spots around the Center, on Bayou Castine, and private residences of avid birders whose grounds contain butterfly and bird attracting plants, birdfeeders, birdhouses, bird baths and water features to attract a variety of birds.
All trips are "Self Drive." Maps and driving instructions will be provided in advance and you will drive yourself to the meeting place for the start of the trip (be sure provide Northlake Nature Center with accurate contact information so they can get this information to you).
Before and after scheduled trips, take a leisurely walk through the Northlake Nature Center property, which offers over 7 miles of hiking trails for self-guided tours and a canoe launch free for public use. Habitats and features at the Nature Center site include a grove of giant southern magnolias, Cypress/gum swamp, and a beaver pond on Bayou Castine where you may see wood ducks, migrant warblers, and a flock of over twenty wild turkeys.
