The public is invited to join the American Association of University Women (AAUW) for its annual Salad Supper to hear guest speaker, former Louisiana State Representative Diane Winston.

This event will be held at Christ Episcopal Church Commons Hall on Tuesday, September 18th beginning at 6:00 PM. There will be no charge to attend this meeting but reservations are required to ensure sufficient food and seating; please contact Minta Dietrich at 626-9730 to make your reservation.

Ms. Winston will relate nonpartisan stories about people (especially women) who risked their lives to vote during the 2010 national election in Iraq as well as discuss efforts in Bahrain and other countries that she has visited.

In addition, a preview of the 2012 AAUW Voter Education Campaign, “IT’S MY VOTE. I WILL BE HEARD” will be presented. This is an effort to encourage millennial women to vote in the upcoming election since statistics have shown that these are more apathetic voters. As Diane Winston will show, women voters in Iraq were enthusiastic about the privilege of voting and expressing their views in their country whereas this is not always the case in the United States.

Diane Winston served in the Louisiana Legislature for 12 years as a State Representative for District 77. Her service included three years as chair of the Louisiana Women’s Legislative Caucus. In 2006, Winston was chosen by the National Council of State Legislators (NCSL) as one of only three legislators to travel to Indonesia three weeks after the devastating tsunami to provide legislative strengthening workshops, including emergency response, for this country’s parliament.

Through her association with the National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL) she traveled to both Taiwan and Bahrain in the Middle East to network with women seeking power and influence within their respective governments. Term-limited in 2008, Winston’s continued association with the NFWL resulted in her being chosen to lead a seven member delegation of women legislators to Iraq in 2010 as international observers of this country’s historic democratic national election.

The American Association of University Women, with its nationwide network of more than 100,000 members, 1,300 branches, and 550 college and university partners, has been a leading advocate for equity and education for women and girls since 1881.
