Christ Church presents the annual celebration of great jazz music in Covington with Jazz in January, Jan. 25-27, 2019 at Christ Episcopal Church, 120 S. New Hampshire Street at the entrance to Bogue Falaya Park in downtown Covington.
Concerts will be held at 7pm on Friday and Saturday; tickets are $40 in advance or $50 at the door and are available at the church office, 120 S. Friday Jan. 25: Cubana Night
Aldo López-Gavilán – Award winning pianist excelling in both the classical and jazz worlds
Yissy Garcia and her Grammy-winning band Bandancha – known for blurring the boundaries of Latin jazz, electronics, funk, R&B and Afro-Cuban music.
Saturday, Jan. 26: Americana Night
Louisiana's own Terrance Simien and his Zydeco Experience - one of the most respected and accomplished artists in American roots music today. He and his band have earned two Grammys and have performed at over 8,500 concerts in 45 countries.
And from Texas, the Blue Water Highway - described as "haunted and haunting, tough but melodic. They offer elegant lyrics and a toe-tapping blend of blues, folk and indie rock.
Sunday, Jan. 27: Free Jazz Masses
There will be two free jazz masses, 9 am and 11:30 am, paying homage to Elvis, the King of Rock and Roll, and one of the most significant, and most tragic, cultural icons of the 20th century. Rev. Bill Miller's sermon, for the day will be “If I Can Dream: A Tribute to Elvis Presley."
An episcopal church, school and retirement community in the diocese of Louisiana, is also the presenter of the Third Sunday Concert Series, which features area musicians and singers, usually on the third Sunday of each month, September to May each year. Concerts begin at 5:00 p.m. and are free and open to the public. Concerts are supported in large part by memberships. In addition to the series at Christ Church, two summer concerts are hosted in the Atrium Gallery at Christwood Retirement Community, 100 Christwood Blvd., Covington.
