Two-hour narrated boat tour of one of America's most pristine cypress swamps. Learn the history and ecology of the swamp and its inhabitants. Morning and afternoon tours available by reservation. Hotel pickups available. Venture into the interior of one of the wildest swamps in America, the 250-square-mile Honey Island Swamp, with a professional wetland ecologist on a personalized narrated nature tour. Dr. Wagner's was founded in 1982 and offers daily tours, year-round. Honey Island earned its name because of the honeybees once seen on a nearby island. A tract of bottomland timber lying between the East Pearl and West Pearl rivers, Honey Island is between three and seven miles wide and 15 to 20 miles long, about 50 minutes from New Orleans. Nearly 70,000 acres of it is a permanently-protected wildlife area--the Nature Conservancy's First Louisiana Nature Preserve. You may see the red wolf, deer, raccoons, wild boar, Florida cougar, many species of exotic birds including an active bald eagle nest that has occupied the swamp since 1910, and of course, alligators. Your tour guide will make certain sounds that attract any gators in the area, and gators appear for their reward---a few marshmallows.
