The original Middendorf’s is a longstanding seafood restaurant in Manchac, LA best known for its “World Famous Original Thin Fried Catfish®.” The restaurant is still using the same mouthwatering recipe that Josie Middendorf introduced when it opened on July 4, 1934. In 2019, its 85th anniversary, the restaurant opened its second location in Slidell right off I-10, Exit 261 (Oak Harbor) featuring the same menu.
Try the crawfish poppers and alligator bites to start, or a cup of crab & shrimp gumbo. While catfish (of all thicknesses) is the star of the menu, entrees include whole grilled or fried fish, shrimp served a dozen different ways and soft-shell or stuffed crab. Seafood is clearly their specialty, but you can also get a hamburger steak or ribeye, tasty fried chicken, salads and sandwiches--seafood po-boys, burgers and grilled chicken breast--as well as a kids' menu. Topping off a great dinner are your choice of eight decadent desserts, like pecan or key lime pie, German Chocolate Cake with ice cream, or the "Good Old Fashioned Banana Split."
The restaurant features down-home comfort and a touch of whimsy. Inside you'll find handmade table tops, thick wood paneling, door frames and hostess stand. The 42-foot, handmade cypress bar serves wine and beer on tap. Venture outside, and you’ll find an open-air porch overlooking an inviting sand/play area for the kids with fountains, palm trees and tiki huts.
Middendorf's is open Wednesday-Thursday for lunch and Friday-Sunday for lunch and dinner. Online ordering available for take-out. Happy Hour 3-6pm, Wednesday through Friday.
